The Aphrodite pin is one of the oldest cultural objects to be had that integrates pearls. The pin has two pearls on it and it was found in the Sanctuary of Aphrodite in Cyprus. It dates back to 300 B.C. There are two Pearl Earrings on this pin, one small and one big. One of them is a freshwater pearl and the other a saltwater pearl. More than 6,000 years ago in the Persian Gulf region people were buried with a pierced pearl in their right hand. We find that the ancient trade routes gradually expanded and the societies gradually expanded across Asia and Europe. The pearls became vital symbols of wealth, social standing and religious beliefs and many things were associated with them. The ancient Middle Eastern cultures were the first to place importance on the pearls. In the Roman Empire, pearls were said to be put on jewelry with emeralds and with gold.

The Akoya cultured pearls are very popular in jewelry. The Japanese specialize in the production of cultured Akoya Salt Water pearls and there are special farms for making these pearls. The size and luster determine the quality of these pearls. The pearls were cultured for the first time in the 1920s and it was found that they gave off a good cream color. The Fresh Water Pearls are produced by freshwater mollusks or mussels and they look good when they are combined with other precious stones. The freshwater mussels produce wonderful pearls but many freshwater mussels have suffered from human habitation and pollution and their number has dwindled.
